study questions:
For the Next Lesson – Genesis 11:1-26
1. Warm-up. How is pride defined in the dictionary? How would you define pride in your own words? How does pride impact the way we live, interact with others and relate to God?
2. Read verses 1-2. Verse 1 says there is only one language on the whole earth, yet Genesis chapter 10 describes the various clans, languages and nations developed throughout the earth. So, how does chapter 11 relate to chapter 10 (see Genesis 10:25)? Where is the land of Shinar?
3. Read verses 3-4. What did the people hope to accomplish by building their tower? Why was this sinful and significant? What is the primary sin being displayed here? How is the people’s resistance to “be dispersed” sinful (see Genesis 9:1)? Why do you think they were so resistant? How do people in our culture display these same sinful patterns in heart, attitude and action? How do we as Christians display this same attitude? How can we help ourselves and each other resist these attitudes and sin patterns?
4. Read verses 5-9. What did God do first in response to the people in Shinar building the tower? Why is it important that we notice what God did first? How would you summarize in your own words what God says in verses 6-7? What did God do in verses 8-9? Take some time to brainstorm together and list the different things we learn about God from His words and His actions in verses 5-9. What is the situation of people on earth at the end of verse 9? Do they have hope, a future, a plan? How so?
5. Read verses 10-26. The primary purpose of this genealogy is to link Abram as a descendant of Shem. Why is this important? See also Genesis 9:26 and 12:3. What does this teach us about God? How does this encourageto trust God in both the good and bad times?
6. So what? We all struggle with pride in some way just like the people from Shinar. What is one way you can grow in rejecting pride and embracing humility in your life? What is one thing you have been reminded about God from this study that you need to embrace this week?
