As we begin to look forward to a new year let’s take some time to think about and study the concept of hope. Warm-up. How is “hope” commonly defined in our culture? Why is the concept of hope important? What happens to a person if they lose hope?
Read Philippians 1:19-20. How should hope be defined based on these verses? How does this biblical perspective of hope differ from how hope is commonly defined in our culture? What is the basis or foundation for our hope? Why do these different perspectives about hope matter in real life?
Read 1 Peter 1:13. What is the main command given in this verse? Is this an easy command to follow? Why or why not? What prevents us from carrying out this command? According to this verse, what will help us to follow this command? How well are you doing in following this command?
Read 1 Peter 3:15. What should we always be prepared to do? For you personally, do you feel prepared? Why or why not? What could you do to be more prepared? According to this verse, in what manner should we go about doing this?
So what? What about the concept of hope encourages you? Do you feel like you consistently live with hope? Why or why not? In what ways can you personally be prepared to help others find true hope?
