Study Questions - Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Note – As you read this passage, remember Deuteronomy contains Moses’ final instructions and insight for the people he loved and led for over 40 years.
1.Read verse 4. What are these words in verse 4 communicating about God? Consider Isaiah 45:5-6 and Jeremiah 10:6-7 to give more insight. Do you truly believe what is said about God in these passages in Deuteronomy, Isaiah and Jeremiah? Take a few minutes to think and brainstorm about all the different ways that God is unique? As you consider these things about God, what is your response?
2.Read verse 5. What command is given here? Read Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27. Why is this command repeated by Jesus in each of these Gospels? What do these passages teach us about how we are to interact with and relate to God? What does this look like in practical, everyday life?
3.Read verses 6. What does it mean for God’s commands to be on your heart? Read Psalm 19:1-11. Why would we want God’s commands to be on our hearts? Do you believe God’s commands are on your heart? How so?
4.Read verses 7-9. According to these verses, what does it look like for God’s commands to be on our hearts today, in our lives? As you consider these verses, is there evidence in your life that God’s commands are on your heart? Why or why not?
5.So what? How is our understanding of the uniqueness of God (verse 4) the source or the cause of everything else we read in verses 5-9? So, if we want to grow in loving God and having God’s commands on our hearts, what do we need to do? How are you going about doing this?
