For Next Lesson: Genesis 4:16-26
1. Read verses 11-12 and 16-18. What were the consequences for Cain’s sin? Were these consequences significant? How so? Where did Cain go and what did Cain do after God cursed Cain and gave him consequences for his sin? Did life seem to be going well for Cain after he left the presence of God? How so?
2. Read verses 19-24. What sin appeared in the lives of Cain’s descendants? How does this sin reflect the sin of their forefather Cain? What were the cultural advances accomplished by Cain’s descendants? Did life seem to be going well for Cain and his descendants from a worldly perspective? How about from a biblical perspective? By what standard should we evaluate success in life? What does a successful life look like?
3. Read verses 25-26. What did God do next for Adam and Eve? What did the descendants of Seth do, and what was Seth’s legacy? Take a few moments to compare the legacy of Cain to the legacy of Seth? How were they similar? Different? Why do you think the description of Seth’s legacy in this passage was so short compared to the description of Cain’s legacy? Does it seem like evil is prospering in this passage? How so?
4. Read Psalm 37:1-7. Does it ever seem like evil prospers and gets ahead in our world today? How have you seen this big picture in our world? How have you seen this personally? What does God promise to do for those who follow Him? What will happen to the evil and the wicked? What should our response be when it appears like people who reject God and embrace evil are prospering?
5. So what. As you evaluate your life, what legacy are you leaving to others around you? Anything you want to change? What are you taking away from this study that encourages you to live for God rather than embracing what the world has to offer?
