study questions:
Philippians 3:12-16
1. Read verse 12.
2. Read verses13-14. What is the “it” in verse 13 that Paul has not made his own (think back to the “this” and “it” from verse 12)? What is the one thing Paul does to make “it” his own? Let’s break-down the different aspects of Paul’s approach to making “it” his own:
a. Note “forgetting what lies behind”. What things is Paul talking about that need to be forgotten? What things do we need to leave behind as people today? What things do you need to leave behind personally (take a minute to really think about this)?
b. Note “straining forward to what lies ahead”. What does Paul mean by “straining forward”? How can you strain forward in your life?
c. What is the goal Paul is talking about? What is the prize? What is the upward call of God (consider the “this” and “it” you have considered in verses 12-13)? In what ways do you live for the goal, prize and upward calling in your life? In what ways could you grow in living for the goal, prize and upward calling in Jesus Christ?
3. Read verses 15-16. Does Paul think his way of thinking about the Christian life in verses 12-14 is optional? Why or why not, and why is this important for us in our walk with God?
4. So what? Take a minute to read back through and consider this passage. What is God teaching you about how you walk with Him in your life?
