SERMON NOTES:
Rejoice and Watch Out!
study questions:
Philippians 3:1-11
- Read verse 1. What command does Paul give here, and what does it look like to obey this command in real life? How is this command “safe” for the Philippians and for us? Why is it that we need to be reminded often to rejoice? Would you say that your life is characterized by joy in the Lord? Why or why not?
- Read verses 2-3. Who are the “dogs”, “evildoers” and “those who mutilate the flesh” that Paul is talking about here? Why do you think Paul is so harsh toward them? Paul makes three statements about Christians in contrast to the “evildoers”. What are these three statements, and what does each one mean? How do these three characteristics reflected in your life?
- Read verses 4-7. Why does Paul spend so much effort highlighting his Jewish heritage and former zeal? What is Paul’s attitude toward his background and efforts to do good works? What is your attitude toward the good works and efforts to be accepted by God in your life? Why is it important to thoughtfully consider your attitude toward working for your acceptance from God?
- Read verses 8-11. What is the most important thing in Paul’s life? What is Paul willing to give up to get this? What is Paul’s ultimate goal? What is the most important thing in your life? Does the way you use your time, your money and expend your energy reflect this priority? How so? Are you willing to make the same sacrifices as Paul to get this? Finally, do you share Paul’s focus on what is coming after death? Why or why not?
- So what. As you consider this entire passage, how can you find joy that is beyond your circumstances? What practical steps can you take to cultivate a life full of joy?
