For the Next Lesson: Genesis 4:1-16

1. Read verses 1-2. What were the names of the first two children born to Eve, and what was Eve’s response to the birth of her first child? In what way did Eve recognize God’s role in the birth of her firstborn? Do you routinely see and acknowledge God’s role in the various events in your life? How so? What helps or distracts you from seeing God’s involvement in your life?

2. Read verses 3-5. What was the difference in the offerings brought to the Lord by Cain and Abel? How did God respond? How did Cain respond to God’s feedback? What motivated Cain to respond this way? What kind of “offerings” do you bring to the Lord? Are your “offerings” more like Cain or Abel? Do you ever struggle with an attitude like Cain’s? How can you be more like Abel?

3. Read verses 6-9. Explain in your own words how God warned Cain in theses verses. How does the warning given to Cain apply to us as well? How did Cain respond to this warning? What did Cain mean when he said, “am I my brother’s keeper”? Should we strive to be our sister’s or brother’s “keeper”? Why and how should we do this?

4. Read verses 10-16. What were the consequences that God gave Cain for his sin? What was Cain’s response to his God-given consequences? How have you experienced consequences for your sin in your life? How did you respond to the consequences? How should we respond (see also Proverbs 3:11-12)?

5. So what. How has God challenged you as you have studied this passage? Is there a sin to confess? A promise to claim? A truth about God to embrace? A principle to apply?
