For the Next Lesson: Genesis 3:16-24

We have already seen the consequences of sin for Satan in verses 14-15, now we will see the consequences of sin for Adam, Eve and all of creation… along with God’s gracious provision.

1. Read verse 16. What are the consequences of sin for Eve? What does the word “desire” mean in context in Genesis 4:7? What do you think the word “desire” means for the Eve in Genesis 3:16? How do these consequences for Eve reveal themselves in real, everyday life for women in general? How have you personally observed or experienced these consequences?

2. Read verses 17-19. What did Adam specifically do to deserve consequences from God (see vs. 17)? Do men today continue to deal with a similar sin pattern? How so? What are the consequences for Adam’s sin? How is the earth affected, and what do you think the earth was like before this curse (see also Romans 8:19-22)? How was Adam’s life affected? How do you see the affects of the curse in our world today and in your life? How does an understanding of the curse provide both perspective and encouragement as we walk through life?

3. Read verses 20-24. What does the name Eve mean (look up online, in a commentary or a dictionary)? How does Adam giving his wife the name Eve express his faith and trust in God’s provision and grace? How does God graciously provide for Adam and Eve in verse 21? What did God have to do to provide for them? How does this action point to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sin? How do God’s actions in verses 22-24 also demonstrate God’s gracious provision (hint: they will have no more access to the tree of life)?

4. So what. As a man or woman, do you struggle with any of the sin patterns described in these verses for Adam and Eve? How so? Is there anything you need to confess to God or anyone else? What about God’s provision in verses 20-24 sticks out to you most? How do you see God’s gracious provision personally in your life?
