study questions:

For the Next Lesson – Genesis 16:7-16

1.Read verses 7-8. Why did Hagar need to be found (see Genesis 16:6, 8)? Where was Hagar going (perhaps google “shur” or look in a study bible)? Has there ever been a time in your life when you needed to be found by God? How did God go about finding you?

2.Read verse 9. What instructions did the angel of the Lord give to Hagar? How do you feel about these instructions? How do you think Hagar felt? Has God ever told you to do something you didn’t want to do? Describe the situation, and what happened?

3.Read verses 10-12. What did the angel of the Lord promise to Hagar? What future could she anticipate for her son? What was she supposed to name her son, and what does that name mean? What reminder or lesson can Hagar draw from this name? What reminder about God should we get from this name?

4.Read verses 13-16. How did Hagar respond to the angel of the Lord? How did God’s actions and promises affect Hagar? What does “Beer-lahai-roi” mean? What does this teach us about God?

5.So what. What is one thing about God from this passage that has encouraged you? Take some time this week to meditate about this attribute and how it affects your life and your relationship with God. Find a verse in the Psalms or elsewhere that highlights this attribute.
