For the Next Lesson: Matthew 28:16-20

(For use in your personal Bible study or in your Community Group)

1. Read verses 16-17. How would you describe the setting of this event in Jesus’ life as explained in these verses? How did the disciples respond to the presence of Jesus? Why do you think they responded this way? If you were with the disciples, how do you think you would have responded?

2. Read verse 18. What did Jesus first say to the disciples? Why do you think he started this way? What can you learn from this verse that applies to your life?

3. Read verses 19-20. The main verb in this passage is “make disciples”. Do you think this is a command or a request? Take a moment to look up the definition of a disciple. How do these verses describe and explain what it looks like to “make disciples”? Take a few minutes to really think and talk about what making a disciple looks like in real life. How does the last sentence in verse 20 help encourage you in striving to make disciples?

4. So what? Why do you think this passage is frequently called the Great Commission? How would you summarize this commission? How does this Great Commission apply to our church? How does this Great Commission apply to your life? How can you personally grow in how you are living out the Great Commission?
