SERMON NOTES:
As Christians we are pro-life because God is pro-life.
God believes life begins in the womb at conception. (Psalm 139:13-16)
God calls us to speak-up for those who cannot speak for themselves. (Proverbs 31:8-9)
How can we speak-up?
study questions:
Valuing Life
1. Read Proverbs 31:8-9. Verses 8-9 are parallel verses that serve to bring clarity to each other. Therefore, what is meant by “open your mouth” in verses 8-9? Who are the “mute” this verse is talking about in biblical times? Who are the “mute” in our day? How can and should we open our mouths for the “mute” in our day? What action should we be taking and on behalf of whom?
2. Read Isaiah 1:16-17. How can we as Christians “wash” ourselves and make ourselves “clean”? What is God’s attitude toward evil? What should our attitude be toward evil and how do we define what is evil? According to verse 17, what should the Israelites be focused on? What would it look like if we lived-out the instructions in verse 17?
3. Read Micah 6:6-8. How would you put the question in verse 6a in your own words? In verses 6b-7 several questions are asked in response to the first question in 6a. What point do you think the author is making? What are the “offerings” that we make in our time that are not necessarily pleasing to God by themselves? What does verse 8 teach us about how to please God? What does it look like to authentically live-out each of the instructions in verse 8?
4. So what? Sunday, January 17 is the annual pro-life Sunday when we remember the plight of unborn babies. How do the instructions given in these verses apply to us in how we treat the unborn? Orphans and foster children? Widows? Poor and destitute? What is one thing you are taking from your study of theses passages that specifically applies to your life?
