For the Next Lesson - Everlasting Father

1. Read Isaiah 9:6-7. The name “Everlasting Father” in verse 6 refers to Jesus as the ruler or king who lovingly governs His people. According to verse 7, how long will Jesus reign? On whose throne will He reign? How else is His reign described? What would it be like to live in a country or a kingdom under a Monarchy where Jesus was king? How would it differ from how we live now under the American democracy?

2. Read 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16. What did God promise King David in these verses? Was this promise in 2 Samuel made before or after Isaiah 9? So, how do these verses in 2 Samuel relate to Isaiah 9:6-7? Why is the relationship between these two passages important to recognize and understand? What does the relationship between these two verses teach us about God?

3. Read Luke 1:31-33. What similarities do you see between these verses in Luke and the previous passages in Isaiah 9:6-7 and 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16? How does Jesus fit in with all of the verses? Why is it important to recognize how all these passages relate? How do these verses give you confidence in Jesus as your King and in your relationship with Him?

4. Read Psalm 90:2 and Psalm 102:12. What do you learn about God in these verses? How does what you learn in theses verses affect how you see and interact with God?

5. So what. Do you willingly submit to God as your sovereign Lord and King who has absolute authority in your life? Why or why not? Are there areas in your life where you fail to live under God’s authority? Why are you protecting these areas from God’s authority? Do you believe God truly cares for you like the perfect father? Why or why not? How does believing in God’s love for you help you to submit to His authority in your life? What is one thing you are taking away from this study that applies to your life this week?
