For the Next Lesson - Pursue Treasure

Matthew 6:19-25

1. Read Verse 19. What first comes to mind when you think of treasure? What are examples of earthly treasure? What is the primary issue with earthly treasure that Jesus is bringing up? What else happens to earthly treasure beside moth, rust, and theft?

2. Read verse 20. Jesus commands us now to pursue a different type of treasure. How is this treasure different? Why is it a good long-term investment plan? List some examples of heavenly treasures.

3. Read verse 21. Where is your heart today? What have you been “building” in your life; earthly treasures or heavenly treasures?

4. Read verse 22-23. Jesus now uses the metaphor of your eyes to describe the inner self (heart). How is Jesus right when he says that the eyes are the “lamp” of the body? How does your perspective on life, friends, neighbors, self, and God influence you? Eyes that focus on earthly treasure are “full of darkness.” Why? Do earthly treasures truly satisfy us? Why is it foolish to store up earthly treasures?

5. Read verse 24. Now Jesus uses obedience to two masters to further his point. Have you ever had or felt like you had two bosses? Why is that problematic? What does Jesus highlight as the biggest problem? When we pursue earthly treasures, how are we serving “two masters?” What should we do if we find ourselves in that place?

6. Read verse 25. How is anxiety (fearfulness) a natural result of building earthly treasures? Jesus wants you to have peace in your life. Have you felt anxious over something today? Is it possible that something you treasured (respect, control, possessions) was threatened? The remedy is not to abandon things all together! Many things in life are good. It is when we make a good thing a treasure that life gets twisted up. How do we make God our only treasure?
