For the Next Lesson – Habakkuk 3:16-19

1. Read verse 16. Take a few moments to consider the vivid descriptions of how Habakkuk’s body was responding to fear. What did Habakkuk “hear”, observe and see to cause him to respond like this? To answer this question read verses 1-15 aloud. Do you respond to the character and actions of God like this? Why or why not? How did his observations of God help him to “quietly wait” for the Lord even as he faced difficult circumstances?

2. Read verse 17. What kind of situation do these words describe? What is a situation in your life that has been very difficult, overwhelming and caused you to doubt God?

3. Read verse 18. What does Habakkuk commit to doing in response to a life-threatening and overwhelming time? What enables Habakkuk to “rejoice”? What empowers him to “take joy”? Can you rejoice in the same way when you face times of trouble? Why or why not?

4. Read verse 19. Who gives Habakkuk the strength to rejoice (see also Psalm 27:1 and 46:1)? Why is this significant? How does the surefootedness of a deer illustrate what God does for us? How have you seen this in your own life or the life of others?

5. So what. What prevents you from finding joy in life? How can this passage help you to find joy beyond your circumstances? How can you apply this passage to your heart, attitude and life right now?
